REACTOR DEPARTMENT

Reactor DepartmentReactor Department is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of two nuclear reactors and four steam driven main engines which allow the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) to easily go anywhere in the world. Reactor Department also generates and regulates all electrical power utilized throughout the ship and provides the water necessary for washing aircraft, showers, laundry, cooking and many other daily tasks. Reactor Department is manned by approximately 500 nuclear and conventionally-trained Sailors from four ratings: Electrician's Mates; Electronic Technicians; Machinist's Mates; and Enginemen.

M DIVISION
Machinery Division is made up of Machinist's Mates who operate and maintain the steam systems for propulsion, electricity, catapults, hotel services, and the potable water system.

RA DIVISION
Reactor Auxiliaries Division is made up of Enginemen who operate and maintain emergency diesel generators that provide emergency power.

RC DIVISION
Reactor Controls Division is made up of Electronics Technicians who operate and maintain the intricate and highly complex instrumentation and control systems for the nuclear reactors.

RE DIVISION
Reactor Electrical Division is made up of Electrician's Mates who operate and maintain the ship's electrical generation and distribution system.

RL DIVISION
Reactor Laboratories Division is made up of Machinist's Mates who minimize plant corrosion and ensure that radiation and contamination stay out of the personnel spaces.

RM DIVISION
Reactor Mechanical Division is made up of Machinist's Mates who operate and maintain the mechanical support systems for the nuclear reactors.

RT DIVISION
Reactor Training Division provides the expertise to coordinate a wide array of initiatives. These include developing training goals, writing schedules, coordinating level of knowledge checks, running propulsion plant drills, administering watchstation qualification exams, maintaining detailed personnel training records, and perhaps most importantly, indoctrinating newly reported personnel in basic nuclear systems and operations.

RX DIVISION
Reactor Administrative Division is responsible for all administrative functions. The department is comprised of LAN administrators who maintain the Classified Local Area Network (LAN) used within the department; Maintenance Manager Personnel, who ensure material readiness is maintained throughout the department; the Department Career Counselor; and the Department Senior Enlisted Advisor.

RDC DIVISION
Reactor Damage Control Division is ready to combat any fire, flood, or other disaster in all propulsion plant spaces.
